Thursday 27th February

Year 8 Science Students collected final data for their Osmosis Lab and spent the lesson completing their graphs and conclusions. The Lab is due to be submitted tomorrow (Friday 28th February). Students will also sit their Topic 1 and 2 Quiz tomorrow. Please see previous blog posts for revision concepts. Year 9 Science Students are at the end stage of completing their Lab Stations workbook on Biodiversity. Answers to the workbook questions have bee provided to students with discussions on key ideas and concepts completed. Students should be revising their notes and reading pages 4-49 of their textbook for further clarification of concepts. Note: Quiz for Topics 1 and 2 (everything from the Lab Stations) to be held Thursday 5th March.

Monday 24th February

Year 8 Science Students learnt about diffusion and osmosis in preparation for their lab this week. The lab will be completed in class and submitted for feedback on Friday (the same day as the Topic 1 and 2 Quiz). See blog post from Friday 21st February for an outline of revision topics for the quiz. Year 9 Science Students are continuing to work through the various Biodiversity Stations this week. The workbook will be completed in class and submitted on Friday. A comment about how well the workbook has been completed will be made. Students will then be preparing for their Quiz (which will be held on Thursday  5th March). The below topics and concepts will be assessed in the quiz: Definitions of key terms, such as asexual, sexual, mitosis, meiosis, gamete, zygote, chromosome, somatic, natural selection, sexual dimorphism, taxonomy, classification, species, genus, food web, consumer, producer, adaptation, variation comparing asexual and sexual reproduction (advantages, d...

Friday 21st February

Year 8 Science Please see below some revision notes that can help you prepare for your Topic 1 and 2 Quiz (held Friday 28th February). Define the following terms: cells, tissue, organ, organ system, organelle, diffusion, osmosis, concentration, unicellular, multicellular, selectively permeable Know how to label a plant and animal cell  (there are lots of practice ones online if you do a google image search for labelling plant and animal cells) Know the differences between plant and animal cells Know the function of different organelle and whether they are found in plant, animal or both types of cells  (cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, vacuole, mitchondria, rough ER, smooth ER, Golgi Body, Cel Wall, Chloroplast) Using amoeba and paramecium as examples, explain how they move, obtain food and reproduce. Compare diffusion, osmosis and active transport (direction of movement in relation to concentration of solutions, types of substrates transported, use of energy...

Thursday 20th February

General Announcements Thank you to all the parents and students who came to speak with me this afternoon at the student-led conferences. It was lovely to meet you all. If you have further questions, or were unable to attend the conferences, please do not hesitate to be in touch: manovak@cbe.ab.ca Year 8 Science Students all did a wonderful job making and presenting their cell models. The creativity blew me away and their demonstration of understanding was of a high standard. Grades for these models will be available by Monday 24th February. Note: Students will have a quiz on Topics 1 and 2 of the Cells and Systems unit on Friday 28th February. Year 9 Science Students are continuing to work through the various station activities to complete their lab work ready to hand in their work booklets by Friday 28th February.  Note: Students will have a quiz on all the concepts learnt during the lab station work on Thursday 5th March.

Tuesday 18th February

General Announcements I hope you all had a happy and safe Family Day long weekend. Note: Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held this Thursday afternoon with Invitationals held Friday. Year 8 Science Outline for this week: Tuesday - cell model project presentations (explanation of cell components, research of chosen organelle making links between structure and function, explanation of how materials meet 'green' requirements). Wednesday - Osmosis and diffusion theory lesson (textbook pages 115-119) Thursday - lesson only for 8-40 due to Parent-Teacher Conferences, students working through review questions from textbook (pg 88, 92, 97, 102 (not Q2), 109 and 114) Year 9 Science Students continuing to work through Lab Stations. For additional information, please refer to pages 4-49 of the textbook.

Wednesday 12th February

Year 8 Science Students are working on their cell model and presentation. These are both due on Tuesday next week. The short presentation will involve each member of the group presenting one aspect of the task:      * description of the cell model created      * research about ONE organelle of choice (research must involve the function of the organelle          and an explanation of how the structure of the organelle enables it to function)      * explanation of the materials and resources used to make the model and how they fit with the          'green' (reusable, recycled, recyclable) requirements. Note: presentation to be no more than 5 minutes. No computers will be available for the presentation, so students should not be making a PowerPoint presentation - their cell model is the only visual they will need. Year 9 Science Students are continuing to work through their...

Monday 10th February

General Announcements Please note: this is a short week due to Teachers' Convention on Thursday and Friday. Year 8 Science Last chance for Light and Optics Unit Final re-test Monday 10th February. On Friday 7th February, students were given their 'Cell Model' task. This is a project that requires students (in groups of 2) to make a model of a cell out of repurposed, recycled (and recyclable) and 'green' materials. Students must bring materials to class ready for Tuesday's lesson. Coming up this week: Monday - cells (the Cell Theory, structure and function of different cell types, organelles)               - pages 103, 108, 109 Tuesday - working on cell model in class Wednesday - working on cell model in class Year 9 Science Environmental Chemistry Unit Final re-test being held Monday 10th February. Students have been told that they must make a time to speak to me BEFORE sitting the re-test. On Friday 7th February, students wer...

Monday 3rd February

Year 8 Science Students completed their Topic 1 Quiz and reviewed the conventions for drawing scientific diagrams. Coming up this week: Monday - quiz and scientific drawings Tuesday - microscopes Wednesday - using microscopes Thursday - making wet mount slides Friday - single-celled organisms Year 9 Science Students completed their Unit Final for Environmental Chemistry. Their 'Chasing Ice' Task was due today. I will continue accepting task submissions during the week. Those students who have still not submitted their last two labs (Organics and Bioindicators) need to do that ASAP. Coming up this week: Monday - Unit Final (good luck!) Tuesday - classification activity Wednesday - classification 'response to activity' Thursday - why we classify? Friday - introduction to 'Station' task
